A Hidden Robot Scarf

As an engineer I like robots. OK, sometimes I hate don’t like them when they’re misbehaving. Either way, I can say for sure that I love the idea of robots that we saw in, say, the Jetsons. They were envisioned as pleasant companions that were there to serve us. In fact, if that kind of robot existed today, I think they would make us scarves like the one shown above to show their love and loyalty to us.

What’s seen above, however, is only half the story. Below is the scarf seen from a more upward angle, where the robots are obscured. The “illusion scarf” is made by following this pattern that selectively uses different stitching techniques known as knitting and purling to produce this visual effect.

If robots aren’t really your thing, but you like the idea of having a hidden message on your scarf, here’s where the robot pattern came from. There’s more information as well as another pattern on that page.

It’s claimed that this technique isn’t quite as hard as the excellent results would suggest. Personally, I’m not sure that my knitting skills are up to the challenge. On the other hand, a commentator on the original Reddit post claims to barely be able to tie his or her shoes. Maybe my “yarn skills” aren’t so bad.
